Weather gets better of Marvell's marvels
Bridgend 187-9
Lisvane IV 17-0
Despite the damp outfield and cloudy conditions overhead, Captain Marvell rallied his troops and dragged them into battle, unlike the firsts who decided an afternoon in the bar would be a better idea!
After losing the toss in a game reduced to 40 overs, the hosts were, unsurprisingly, asked to bat. Liam Callahan and the veteran dentist Adrian Daniel opened the innings up, and looked to lay the foundations of a big score. And they did, scoring at 4 an over until the youngster, in his first full season fell for 10.
Daniel looked in good form, playing a host of great shots, all around the wicket before falling for 26. Daniels, as with other batsmen lower down the order, was victim of an LBW. Deceived by the non existent bounce and was trapped plum. His dismissal seemed to sum Daniel luck this year, seemingly poised for a big score, he failed to capitalise on a good start.
Marvells’ marvels were nicely poised for an onslaught going into the last 12 overs. With Alex Frew and the captain himself at the crease the runs started to flow. These two continued to pick off the runs with ease, forcing the field to drop deep, which resulted in several two’s being run.
Captain Marvell, who was playing as a wicket keeper batsman, took the initiative with some big shots and quick runs. Before his attacking mind set ended his ‘cameo.’ Attempting to sweep out of the mud bath, he was bowled to bring his excellent innings to an end for 34 including 6 boundaries.
This left Frew to bat with the tail for the last 6 overs. Despite not playing his usual aggressive innings, the runs still flowed. His innings came to an end after he too was deceived by the low bounce to be trapped LBW for 43, off 19 overs!
Despite this, all the tail chipped in with useful runs which meant Town posted a respectable 187-9 in their 40 overs. The pick of the guests attack were skipper Tony Jenkins 1-38 off 9 and David Montgomery who picked up 4 wickets in 5 overs, but went for 37 runs.
Just after the tea break, the heavens opened and play was suspended. With no break in the weather visible, Marvell and Jenkins called the game off with the visitors 17-0. It was then Marvell stunned the changing room with, as usual, a ridiculously stupid comment. When asked, how long Town fielded for, the reply was "5.6 overs lads." Surely only Marvel could have come up with a comment of that magnitude.
He now takes his soldiers down the road to take on local rivals, and fellow promotion contenders Pencoed.
