Former Australian Fast Bowler Rodney Hogg comes to Bridgend Town

Former Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg believes the future of Bridgend Town Cricket club is extremely bright.

Hogg spoke out after being invited down Newbridge Fields for the Clubs first major social event of the season.

The Australian pace man was also on hand to offer coaching to the youngsters prior to the main event. It was then he realized how fortunate the club are to have so many emerging “quality fast bowlers.”

He said. “I was amazed at the quality of some of the bowlers, particularly young Rhodri Hopes. He has a great in ducker, which is useful, and with his natural ability, he is going to go on and become a start for the club in the years to come.

“The set up of the club is fantastic. The willingness of members to go to extradinary  lengths to organise events such as this, will only help to attract more players to the club, which will push the club further.

“Having spoken to Alun Bunston (Club chairman) it is clear that the foundations are in place for the club to have a  successful future. I have been to several clubs over the years, and this is one of the best.”

Throughout the night Hogg, who took 41 wickets in his first 6 Ashes tests at an incredible average of 12.85, was on hand to answer questions on a one to one basis or in the forum following the meal. He spoke of tales of tours and greatest playing memories as he entertained the sell out crowd of 80 for an hour.

Club second team captain Phil Cadogan said, “ It was an enjoyable night, that was great fun. I was fascinated at some the stuff he has to say.”

And with this being an Ashes year, we had to see Hogg’s view on the series.

“I can see England winning if they prepare wickets for spinners as we lack a world class spinner. The fact there is only one in the squad suggests that we think spin is going to play a little role in the series.”

When asked on his views as to the first test match being at the Swalec Stadium and not Lords, he said, “It does not matter what order the matches are played in, they have got be played at there at some point!”

This was the first of many nights the club is hosting in order to raise the profile and encourage new members to join.

The next of these events scheduled at the moment is on Saturday 18th July when a music night is being hosted along with Graham Williams from the band Racing Cars.
