BTCC Junior Cricket
Home |In response to a request from the ECB that clubs should be more active in providing organised cricket for juniors between the ages of nine and sixteen years of age, following the withdrawal of sports supervision by the teaching profession, a local League was set up in 1975 for players at under sixteen age level. The Bridgend Town Cricket Club was one of the prime movers in setting up this League. Known as the Bridgend and District Youth Cricket League, it was the forerunner of youth cricket as we know it today.
By 1992 various junior leagues had come into being, the strongest being The South Wales Junior Cricket League set up in 1979. Other areas followed suit, the Mid Glamorgan Youth Cricket Association was formed along with all the other areas in Wales.
As the age limits for juniors were pitched at under 11, under 13 and under 15 it was considered that the Bridgend Town Cricketers be formed, and much hard administrative work was put in hand to form a constitution and to produce a balance sheet each year.
Coaching too was introduced all the year round and the Club is proud of its record in supplying good quality young cricketers to our parent club.
In addition to the success of many of our young cricketers (to numerous to mention) lots of young people have come back into the game after giving up for a time, but all have expressed their joy at being able to play and practice organised cricket..
This season in particular, our Young Cricketers have been outstanding when representing the senior club at all levels from 1st XI to 4th XI and it is to be hoped that the Bridgend Town Young Cricketers will flourish in the years ahead.
