Club Information
Formed circa 1840, the club is one of the oldest in Wales. We are based at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend, South Wales and run several sides of varying age groups and abilities including 4 on a Saturday as well as ladies and junior sides.
Bridgend Town CC 1st XI gained promotion to the Swalec Premier Cricket League (South Wales’ leading cricket league) at the end of their 2010 campaign in the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League (Div 1). This season they join illustrious clubs in the Premier League such as Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, and Pontardulais.
In 2009, an unbeaten Town 1st XI won promotion to the Glam / Mon CL Div 1. In 2010 they only lost once. Furthermore, the Town 2nd XI won the Championship and are playing at the highest level for club 2nd teams.
A 5 year plan was put into place in 2008 by former Glamorgan cricketer Roger Davis, in order to lift the level of performance of all teams in the club. That means the four senior Saturday teams, the ladies’ team, the junior teams, and the Sunday XI. Davis’ aim was to encourage more young players to join and to become the base of the 1st XI by 2014. This is bearing fruit.
The South African, Mike Jones, was appointed for seasons 2009 and 2010. This season the coaching of the junior section is in the hands of qualified coach – Bradley Wadlan, who returns to his old club from Pentyrch CC. Bradley will also be an important part of the 1st XI. He has played for Glamorgan 2nd XI and has played Minor County Cricket. Bradley hopes to attract many more young players to the club.
Andrew Davies, the former Glamorgan fast bowler, will continue as club captain, after last year’s wonderful season. He is joined by present Glamorgan star Mike Powell. Also joining is another Glamorgan star, Alex Jones, a local boy from Corntown. Tom baker, an exciting young wicketkeeper/batsman and Glamorgan Academy player, replaces the semi-retired Town stalwart Dickie Morgan. Nick Davies, another Academy player and promising left arm spinner, who is only 19 years old, joins from Cowbridge CC. These players will enhance the 1st team squad, which will include the fantastic run machine that is Grant Humphreys, last season’s leading bowler – the very fast Adam Weaver, Dave Goodway, James Steptoe (VC), Jamie Russell, Rhodri Hopes, and Rhys Clayton – who is currently playing in Australia. Other promising players will be pushing for places in the 1st XI squad.
Roger Davies said “It is important to continue the improvements we have made, as we hope to attract young players to the club. They are the club’s future. We must not forget that this is a community club, and it is good to be in a position that only a couple of the 1st XI players will not be Bridgend/local players. It is also exciting to have Glamorgan stars at the club, as their presence will have a great effect in bringing through young local talent.”.
The 3rd and 4th XIs play in the Welsh Club Cricket Conference.
The club has a strong junior section, with under 11s, 12s, 14s, 15s, 16s, and 19s – which are run by qualified coaches.
The club also enjoyed a cricket tour to Croatia in September 2010.
Off the field the club provides a friendly family atmosphere with a superb social scene (as demonstrated by this years tour to Estonia) with many social events throughout the year. For those wishing to relax and watch a days cricket, a fully licensed bar is open on match days.
We are a friendly club and always keen to welcome new players of all ages and abilities. Come along to our net sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 at Newbridge Fields.
